Wo Tiere im Sommer weilen

Dairy and suckler cows, young cattle, alpine pigs and sheep spend the summer in the high-altitude areas. They all belong to robust breeds and this is also important, because the terrain is impassable and the food supply is varied but rather scarce. The alping makes it possible to harvest enough hay in the valley to provide the animals with their own feed throughout the winter. At the same time, grazing cultivates the cultivated land. This landscape maintenance is in turn a prerequisite for an attractive tourism region. For centuries, however, there were mainly four-legged tourists. Animals from the St. Gallen Rhine Valley or even the northern Italian Bergamasker sheep were annual summer guests on the Rheinwald alpine pastures.
