Beschreibung

The trip to the end of the Calfeisental offers various experiences on a dead-end with the same route out and back. The way with the e-bike to the Walser village Sankt Martin is an experience in itself thanks to the approach. Starting in the spa town Bad Ragaz with an international vibe, the path winds past the impressive Taminabrücke through the peaceful Tamina valley. After the picturesque village of Vättis, the path leads into the spectacular and rough Calfeisental, past the tightly enclosed Gigerwaldsee to the authentic Walser village Sankt Martin. From the village, you can explore the wild and natural surroundings further on foot or by mountain bike, even start extensive mountain hikes. Or simply let yourself be pampered at the Hotel & Restaurant Sankt Martin. For overnight guests, a hot tub and sauna are offered. E-bikes can also be rented locally at the hotel.

Wegbeschreibung

The ride to the Walser settlement of Sankt Martin is best started at the Tamina Therme in Bad Ragaz. After a short ride through the spa town, you reach Valenserstrasse, which winds uphill. No cars are expected on this road anymore, as since the construction of the Taminabrücke, this road is reserved for bikers, hikers, and forestry workers. After a somewhat steep climb, you now have an excellent view of the Taminabrücke. It is recommended not to cross the bridge, as the roads on this side of the valley are quieter. You follow the road past the villages of Valens and Vasön. After Vasön, the road leads down to the Mapragg reservoir. But before reaching the dam, turn right at the first sharp bend off the main road. From here, a simple gravel road runs along the reservoir, away from traffic. At the end of the reservoir, we cross the Tamina via the footbridge. On the opposite bank, the path leads on the road towards Vättis. Just before the village, you switch again to quiet side roads that lead into the village. In the village, follow the signs "Calfeisental" and leave the village on this route. Thanks to the e-bike, you soon leave behind the narrow and harsh valley entrance and reach the impressive dam of the Gigerwaldsee after about 300 meters of elevation gain. From the dam, cars are allowed to drive into the wild romantic Walser village only on the hour until ten minutes before the half hour. A bike light is recommended for this last section.

For the return to the valley, we follow the road via Vättis, then Pfäfers, and from there back to the starting point Bad Ragaz.
