Beschreibung
A steep hiking trail leads from Mathon directly up to the alpine pastures dotted with mountain huts to Mursenas. Gradually the summit of Piz Beverin begins to emerge from the species-rich dry grasslands and pastures. The trail continues across easier, more level terrain from Mursenas to the idyllic Libi lake. This beautiful lake embedded in the mountain landscape has a fireplace site, making it an ideal spot for a lunch break. From here the alpine track steadily winds its way downwards to the village of Lohn, where the next sight awaits, namely the “Klangwald” or Forest of Sounds. The last part of the circular trail goes from Lohn along the Klangweg (Sound Trail) to the turnstile, where you leave the tùn resùn – Klangwald Lohn themed trail to head in the direction of Mathon. On reaching Mathon, it is well worth taking in the views from the terrace of the Muntsulej Restaurant. Ask for the special Nature Park Menu.
The smallest Romansh idiom, known as Sutsilvan, is spoken on the Schamserberg. Romansh culture is also evident in the compact settlement of Haufendorf, where the houses, farm buildings and church all form a compact entity.
Mathon is also known as vischnaunca dils buons zenns, or “the village with the fine bells”. Depending on the weather and the wind direction the harmonious sound of Mathon’s church bell, cast in 1528, can be heard right across the entire Val Schons.
Mathon is home to Tumasch Dolf (1889 - 1963), Romansh composer of lieder, who worked as a teacher in Donat, Zillis, Tamins and Mathon. The collection of Romansh songs lives on in many choirs throughout the valley.
