Bregaglia is a geologically highly interesting area. The Cima dal Cantun and Cima di Castello mountains are made up of Bregaglia granite, which is composed of particularly large potash feldspar crystals. 30 million years ago, when liquid rock from the Earth's interior penetrated into the upper layers, these beautiful crystals were formed by the slow solidification. During the shifts of the tectonic plates in the Tertiary, the granite rock was rapidly raised to the surface.

The rugged rock faces of the Bregaglia Alps are typical of the hard granite rock and are very popular with mountaineers.
