The itinerary can be done in a day starting from the valley floor or from the Savogno refuge, but it is still a very long excursion and reserved for good walkers. With a short extension from the Pass it is also possible to climb to the summits of Pizzo Alto (2475m). Although not elevated, this beautiful isolated peak offers a remarkable panorama, especially in a southerly direction, where a slope of over 2000 meters descends towards Piuro. Once you reach the village of Avero downhill, you can choose whether to continue towards Bondeno, or descend directly to Cimaganda by connecting to the Spluga State Road and the public transport service, thus simplifying the way back to the starting point.

Wegbeschreibung

You have to reach Lake Acquafraggia from Borgonuovo di Piuro or from Savogno. From the south-western edge of the lake, the excursion begins in a westerly direction, skirting the shores of the picturesque Piangesca lake which precedes the pasture of the same name (2098m). Without following the route to Passo di Lei which continues behind the farmhouses, cross the pasture keeping to the left. Then you go up near a small valley, then along a ridge that leads to a promontory at an altitude of 2348 meters. With a diagonal path, you cross the steep grassy banks exposed to the south and, subsequently, you pass just above the huts of Carmezzano (2121m). A final diagonal climb leads to Passo d'Avero (2332m). To climb to Pizzo Alto: from the pass proceed westwards following the marked ridge. The path is easy and winds through meagre pasture, only in the final stretch do some rocks emerge.

This makes it easy to reach the top at 2475 meters. The descent must be made along the same route returning to Passo d'Avero.

Back at the pass, descend with a direct route (NW) to the center of the valley aiming for the visible nucleus of huts grouped near Alpe Avero (1678m). From this beautiful village you can choose whether to continue to the right towards the terrace of Bondeno, or follow the long crossing to the left that reaches Dalò, then Chiavenna (calculate 4 hours from Avero to Chiavenna). However, it is advisable to continue the descent in the center of the valley to the beautiful and ancient wooden huts of Zoccane, then continuing along the orographic right side following a path carved into the steep valley side. Then you reach a panoramic point where a conspicuous cross stands out and from this point you descend directly to the village of Cimaganda, connecting with the Spluga Valley State Road.
