T 10 Via Francisca: Disentis - Lukmanier

The Lukmanier Pass was once the pass that connected the central and eastern parts of Switzerland with Italy, because the Gotthard with the wild Schöllenen Gorge was an obstacle that was difficult to overcome. It was probably the Walsers who made the Schöllenen Gorge accessible around 1200 with a mule track with several bridges. Since this route was shorter for many connections, the importance of the Lukmanier decreased. But since it is less than 2000 meters high, it retained the importance of a pass that is mostly passable even in winter.
The Lukmanier is easy to reach both by road and on foot, as it rises continuously with a moderate gradient from the north. The top of the pass is also the border between the cantons of Graubünden and Ticino, so if someone talks about the "Lukmanier Pass", then it could be a German-speaking Graubünden, if someone speaks of the "Passo del Lucomagno" then it might be a Ticino. But when someone talks about "Cuolm Lucmagn", they are almost certainly a Romansh-speaking Graubünden, because this fourth national language of Switzerland is spoken almost exclusively in Graubünden, and the trend is decreasing.
