St. Antoniuskirche Mathon

Schlittelweg und Kirchen Mathon
Gut sichtbar die Ruinen der alten St. Antoniuskirche und die neue reformierte Kirche
St. Anthony's Church was built around 1200 and is probably a successor to the "ecclesia in Mentaune" mentioned in 831, which was dedicated to St. Martin.

Beschreibung

The ruins of the church ruins of St. Antonius, which are visible today, date back to the beginning of the 13th century. During an excavation in 1956, a semicircular apse from the late Carolingian period was uncovered, which reached as far as the choir of the successor building. The numerous fragments found from pre-Romanesque and Romanesque periods are now kept in the depot of the Rhaetian Museum.

The church was saved from total decay in the 80s of the last century. Since then, wonderful weddings can be celebrated here again in summer.
