From the Black Gate (also called Porta Bual or Bachtor) at the southeast corner of the Städtlis, today only the wrought iron gate angel embedded in the wall can be seen.

Beschreibung

The city gate itself was destroyed in the city fire of 1801. Funeral processions passed through the Black Gate. The Reformed inhabitants of Ilanz were buried in St. Martin, the Catholic inhabitants who lived on the right bank of the Rhine in the cemetery of the neighbouring Catholic village of Sevgein. The Catholics on the left bank of the Rhine buried their relatives in Schluein. Until around 1860, the Reformed pastor led the funeral procession to the community border. In 1888, the Catholic cemetery was built west of the city.
