Beschreibung
The fortress was built around 1230 as the new, noble family seat of the lords of Vaz. This noble family eventually became more and more powerful, competing even with the bishops of Chur. Before long the lords of Vaz enlarged their new castle: Another story was added to the southern wing and the castle received a large, rectangular representative hall. The lords of Vaz resided in Belfort Castle for approximately a century, before the noble family became extinct. Subsequently, the property had various owners until it passed to the Habsburg-Austria – and was destroyed by Graubünden troops in 1499. Today, the ruin is a popular excursion destination, where walls, views and stairs can be explored. A picnic spot with a grill invites guests to make themselves feel at home. Approach to site: The ruin is located a 15 minutes’ walk away from the car park and about 5 minutes’ walk from the bus stop Brienz/Brinzauls GR, Belfort.
