Rocks from the Triassic Period at the Wissmilenpass

Below the Wissensmilen Pass and along the Gipsgrat (gypsum ridge), hikers encounter a wide variety of rocks and colours. The sequence of layers here alternates between wine-red shale, whitish sandstone and yellowish dolomite. These rocks date from the Triassic period. The brownish-grey rocks, which form the summits of Spitzmeilen and Magerrain, already belong to the more recent Jurassic period.
