Rhine-Reuss-Rhôneweg: Realp - Glacier

Our topographical highlight is the Furka Pass at 2430 m. Gone are the days when Sean Connery filmed James Bond's Goldfinger or Richard Long and Max Bill gave free rein to their artistic freedom. Only the original steam locomotives, which were bought back in Vietnam, are steaming again on the old mountain line thanks to hundreds of thousands of hours of volunteer steam train fans. Opened in 1982, the Furka Tunnel is open all year round. On the descent from the Furka Pass, the Rhone glacier is also no longer visible. It melts away at a dramatic pace. The ice-blue glacier grotto, which is created anew every year, can still be visited. On the descent from the Furka Pass, we can study the glacier forefield. We spend the night at the Grand Hotel Glacier du Rhône, which 100 years ago offered 320 guest beds. This was also the time when a church was built for the noble English guests.

The Furka Pass (2430 m) is closed to hikers in winter! In summer, the Furka steam railway runs.
