Neu-Süns / Canova

Neu Sins / Canova
A castle without corners and edges: Neu-Süns is a peculiar phenomenon.

Beschreibung

Why the builders in the middle of the 13th century chose the unusual form of a round castle is not known. In a document from 1392, Canova Neu-Süns is mentioned, which indicates a more recent foundation of the House of Vaz in Domleschg. The castle area was located on a plateau, surrounded by a ring wall. A neck trench served as an obstacle. In the west corner of the ring wall, heavily weathered windows indicate a building. At the top of the plateau are the ruins of the round residential tower, from which the northern half-shell has been preserved to the original height of five floors. At the death of Donat of Vaz, the last of the family, the castle passed to the Counts of Werdenberg after 1338. And when the Schamser rose up against this house around 1450, the castle was so broken that half had to remain as a memorial.
