Mesocco – Ruina Castello – Soazza

Our hiking trail uses the old railway line from Mesocco to Soazza. Passenger transport was banned from the railway line to Mesocco in 1978, goods transport was also banned and discontinued in upper Misox in 1975. From the old train station square in Mesocco, we hike southward to the end of the village; there we cross the street and follow the "Sentiero” (= hiking trail) signs along the train tracks. Passing the new telephone centre, we continue on a slight decline until we cross the stone dam and the mostly dry Runse. Shortly afterwards we turn left to the east; with some steps at places, the path leads to the old canton road.

We follow this for a short time and cross the bridge under the A 13 on the way to Ruina Castello. Passing the restored Chapel of Sta. Maria with its beautiful Christophorus mural, we follow the natural path, “scaling” the castle hill and marvelling at the expansive grounds and the unique view of the entire Misox valley. Then it's back along the same trail to the fork in the path. Now we take the old railway line again and hike through the forest and over the Ri de Verbi ravine. About half a kilometre before Soazza we cross a side-stream again. The tracks then exit the oak wood, and we soon arrive at the former train station square in Soazza, where the post office van stops today.

On the way there are a number of other historical sites to marvel at: the parish church of San Pietro e Paolo and the church of San Rocco in Mesocco or the parish church of San Martino with rich painting in Soazza.
