Gieri Battaglia: three siblings Gion, Deti and Stefan

A hundred years ago, many people in Switzerland were poor. Especially in our mountain villages and so also in Feldis/Veulden. Almost all families ran a small farm there with a few cows, sheep and goats. From morning to evening, the family was busy in the stable, in the field or in the household. And of course, the numerous children had to help. So do the three siblings Gion, Deti and Stefan. From autumn to spring, they attended the comprehensive school there. At that time, that meant twenty to thirty children from the first to the eighth grade in a single classroom – with a single teacher.
