Layers of rock in the Schilstal

Looking towards Schilstal, the red clay slate of the Verrucano rock stands out. The horizontal layers of the much harder grey sandstone and the yellowish-white Triassic dolomite follow above. The peaks of Spitzmeilen, Wissgandstöckli and Oxni consist of limestone from the Jurassic period. The more resistant rocks form the summit areas and the softer clay slates the more carved valley.
