Die Kühe der Safier

Die Kühe der Safier
Thusis is not only a stage location on an international trade route, it has also always been a regional centre.

Beschreibung

In addition to the north-south axis, other connections used to play a major role for the population.

Thusis was an important market town until the 20th century. At the weddings, up to 3000 head of cattle were traded on the market meadow, more than anywhere else in Switzerland. The peasants flocked with their animals from all directions to haggle, pay old debts or make new ones. Especially the Safier, who were known for their robust cows, were for many years completely oriented towards Thusis. When they each drove their cattle to the market, they probably passed by this place.

Probably for this reason, the path was provided with a stone paving, which still gives it its name today: Steinigs Wegli. For just over 100 years, it has led up into the castle forest of Tagstein, a popular walking path for locals and guests.
