Why does Obersaxen have so many chapels? One reason is certainly the location and the division of the 30 hamlets on the 12-kilometre-long panoramic terrace. The deep gorges with their streams, the snowy winters and the poor communication routes were almost insurmountable obstacles to being able to attend the church services in Meierhof regularly.

In 1704, the well-known itinerant painter Johann Jakob Rieg created the remarkable wall paintings in the chapel of St. John the Baptist. Three kings in Platenga. Alois Carigiet restored it true to the original in 1942/43.
