The basic substance of life thus seems to be abundant on Earth. And water also occurs in nature – as the only chemical compound – in liquid, solid and gaseous states.

However, over 97% of the total water supply on earth consists of the salt water of the seas, only 3% is fresh water. And the fresh water is bound to a large extent in the ice of the Arctic and Antarctica as well as in glaciers.

That's why water is so precious even in Graubünden – in this mountainous region, where there are 444 glaciers with a total area of 183 square kilometers.
