Normally, water seeps quickly into the calcareous subsoil. So how did the lake form on this limestone plain? One possible explanation is that the ground here is constantly frozen and the water is dammed.

Permanently frozen ground or permafrost is common in the Alps above 2500 m. In summer, only the top layer thaws temporarily.
