In Switzerland, the witch hunt lasted from the 15th to the 18th century. During this period, about 3,400 women and men were abused and killed, both in Catholic and Reformed areas. Anyone could suspect and accuse everyone, and anyone who had once fallen into the mills of "injustice" could hardly hope for rescue. Because the suspects initially denied all accusations, they had to suffer torture until they confessed everything, including the devil's paramour. Only a few resisted the torture and were acquitted. In Waltensburg, the witch trials began in 1652, with a death sentence for Thrina Joss Jon Ping from Waltensburg. The court records show that a total of 12 people were executed and 2 were exiled. Only 5 were acquitted. In 1718, the last two witch trials were held in Waltensburg. The judges banned Regula Conzin. Anna digl Ambrosi was acquitted.
The two stone columns of a former gallows on the way to the ruins of Munt Sogn Gieri Castle are witnesses of this lively past. The supposed witches, the warlocks and other wrongdoers met their end here on the gallows.
