Cavaione

The spring pasture was used by the inhabitants of Tirano before it was permanently inhabited from the 18th century. During the 19th century, the inhabitants of Cavaione were de facto stateless due to an imprecise demarcation of borders and therefore did not have to pay taxes. It was not until 1874 that the approximately one hundred inhabitants of the village acquired Swiss citizenship. This makes Cavaione the last hamlet to join Switzerland.
