Cavaglia - Selva (Höhenweg)

Mighty larches and stone pines line this high-altitude trail over longer distances. The tour is therefore also well suited for hot summer days. In between, you pass clearings, side valleys and mountain pastures that offer a view of the main valley. Such vantage points along the way are, for example, the Varuna junction, the Baita Stafel or the Maiensäss Val in the unspoilt Val d'Ursé. They live up to the name of the trail: the "Sentiero Panoramico" is an enjoyable panoramic trail. Over the shimmering green Lago di Poschiavo you can see as far as the mountains of nearby Valtellina.

A particularly charming place is the plateau of Selva. The sparsely wooded terrace was formed at the end of the last ice age at the edge of the melting glacier. Today there is a village with two small churches, which stand on the outermost edge of the escarpment high above the valley floor of the Valposchiavo.

For the descent into the valley, a bus service is available in the summer months. The bus must be booked at least one hour in advance.

If you want, you can extend the excursion and hike down to Le Prese.

The route is signposted as a mountain hiking trail (white-red-white, difficulty level T2). The start is at the Cavaglia railway station high above the valley floor. Ascents and descents alternate again and again, but in between the hike is also flat. In addition to forest paths and nature trails through meadowland, wide gravel paths and asphalted but hardly used roads are used.
