Beschreibung

The word "Cascada" comes from the Rhaeto-Romanic language and stands for waterfall. Here, the mountain stream "Ova da Bernina" plunges over two hundred metres towards the valley floor. In addition to the roaring spectacle, visitors can also expect pioneering technical achievements. The Rhaetian Railway winds its way around narrow curves and over historic viaducts on this passage. The trains master the differences in altitude entirely without cogwheels and have been electrified since 1908. The railway line of the Bernina line is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. And even the world-famous panorama trains of the Bernina Express cross the waterfall each time. Incidentally, the neighbouring Morteratsch power station has been powered by water from the Bernina stream since 1891. The extensively modernised plant is the oldest existing hydroelectric power station of the Repower energy supply company. The waterfall path along the Cascada da Bernina is ideal for walks from Pontresina and Morteratsch.
