Casa Gronda, Ilanz

The Great House was built in 1677 for Johan Anton Schmid von Grüneck. The imposing cubic building symbolizes the important political role played by the Schmid von Grüneck family in the 17th century. The tower in the west serves as a stairwell. The combination of bay windows protruding from the edge of the house is made of local stone and shows dignified decorations with vegetable motifs. Until the church was built in 1879, the Saletta on the ground floor served as a place of worship for the newly founded Catholic parish.

The coats of arms above the window on the ground floor: Allianz Schmid von Grüneck (quartered) with Planta von Wildenberg, surrounded by the coats of arms Schmid v. Gr., Travers, Planta and Salis. On the ornamented side pieces the initials I. A. SM G - D. P A W. The small coats of arms refer to the parents of the two spouses. Also above the door in the stair tower is an ornamented gable, dated 1677.

Casa Gronda in the Reformation period

In the 19th century, an important chapter of Ilanz's confessional history took place in this patrician house from the Baroque period. The freedom of establishment and trade in the Swiss federal state led to a steady increase in the number of Catholic populations. Graubünden craftsmen as well as tradesmen of Italian and Austrian origin settled in Ilanz. From 1859 onwards, the liberal-minded, Reformed brewer Oswald, owner of Casa Gronda, rented the richly decorated Saletta to the Catholic population. Until the construction of the Catholic church, this place served as a place of worship.
