Burgruine Munt Sogn Gieri

The ruin of Jörgenberg lies on the outermost rocky spur of a long ridge east of the municipality of Waltensburg. Along with Kropfenstein, Grünenfels Castle and Vogelberg Castle, Jörgenberg was one of the original four castles in Waltensburg and was already settled in the Middle Bronze Age. Jörgenberg was first mentioned in 765 in Bishop Tello's will as castellum.

The hike begins in Waltensburg's village centre. For culture lovers, a detour to the church of Waltensburg is worthwhile.  The Reformed Church is a jewel among churches. The wall paintings of an unknown master from around 1330 are particularly valuable from an art-historical point of
view.You continue to the end of the village, where the path continues to Munt Sogn Gieri/Jörgenberg Castle. The two stone columns of a former gallows on the way to the castle ruins Munt Sogn Gieri, are witnesses of this lively past. The alleged witches, the warlocks as well as other wrongdoers met their end here on the gallows.

The trail markings in the description of this tour are based on the 1:25000 hiking map for Brigels, Waltensburg, Andiast. The hiking map is available at the tourist office Brigels, in the Volg Andiast and Waltensburg, and at the Hotel Postigliun in Andiast.
