Bridge Viamala
Alte Landbrugg Hinterrhein
The Alte Landbrugg is a historic stone bridge from the 17th century, which spans the Hinterrhein in two arches and is an important cultural asset in the Rhine Forest.
Beschreibung
The Alte Landbrugg is located in the municipality of Hinterrhein in the Rheinwald, and is an imposing stone bridge from 1693. It was built by the master builder Peter Zurr from Bergün and spans the Hinterrhein with two arches over a length of almost 40 metres and a width of 2.5 metres. Originally, it served as a river crossing for the old mule track over the San Bernardino Pass.
Shortly after its completion, the bridge partially collapsed in 1696 and was rebuilt by master Bartolomeo Stornino from Chiavenna for 400 guilders. The bridge was damaged several times by floods over the centuries, with the northern yoke collapsing in 1931 and being restored in 1935 with the support of the Swiss Heritage Society.
The current structure shows the traces of the repairs, especially the concrete elements below the arch of the bridge. A hiking trail now leads over the bridge, which runs from the Rheinwald over the San Bernardino Pass. At the highest point of the bridge, stone plaques commemorate the construction and renovations, with inscriptions commemorating the community and the numerous patrons who made the restoration possible.
Öffnungszeiten
The bridge is open to the public. In the evening, the bridge is illuminated.
