Kapelle St. Georg, Obersaxen

The chapel of St. George with its beautiful winged altar can be visited individually. You can borrow the key at the Meierhof information office.

Beschreibung

Probably built at the beginning of the 17th century, at least before 1643.The
building: North-facing chapel, with rolled wooden ceiling. Stitch-arched windows. Entrance to the south. On the gable roof an open roof rider with a curly hood.
Wall paintings exposed only in fragments. Our Lady with Child.
Gothic winged altar: In a square shrine, under delicate scales with keel arch and fish bubbles, three slightly flattened statues stand in front of a golden damascus background: Mary with the Child between St. Catherine and Magdalene. The wings are painted on both sides. On the insides a female saint made of Damascus gold background, on the left St. Barbara, on the right Margaretha, carrying the dragon on the veiled right. Outside a male saint on a blue background, on the left St. Johannes Evang., on the right St. Johann Bapt.. the sculptures of this work are closely related to the sculpture of the altar signed by Yvo Striegel in Disentis, which is particularly evident in a comparison of the Madonnas. They may well be regarded as handwritten works of the master. The altar originally stood in the parish church of Obersaxen in Meierhof, on the Gospel side. Bells: With inscriptions, 1657.
