Hohen Rätien

Since about 1472, the mighty complex has belonged to the Jecklin family, who continue to see themselves as guardians of this important cultural asset and its history. Its strategic location as a stage location on the transit route over the Splügen Pass, which has been used a lot since the early days, explains why High Rhaetia was settled and used from antiquity to the early modern period. The complex is divided into a sacral area around the old valley and baptismal church of St. Johann & Viktor and a more densely built secular area at the Hoch Rialt Tower. Archaeological excavations (1999 to 2005) have uncovered late antique / early Christian religious buildings and a baptistery with a large masonry baptismal font (around 500 AD).

Hohen Rätien is located high above the Hinterrhein on a rocky plateau and is open to the public for an entrance fee. Reachable on foot in about 35 minutes from Burgenweg Domleschg.
