Beschreibung

The second stage of the Emerald Route begins at the Alpenrose restaurant in Sils Maria. The path runs along the shore of Lake Silsersee and after three-quarters of an hour you reach Isola. The delta in front of Isola is one of the nominated Emerald areas and is an important resting area for migratory birds. At the end of the hamlet is the Lagrev restaurant. The path continues along the lake shore to Maloja. At the end of the lake, an asphalt road leads to the Maloja post office. The path runs to the left past the post office, near the atelier of Giovanni Segantini, up to the glacier mills “Marmitte dei Giganti” (giants' kettles) and to the Belvedere tower. Behind the tower, the path goes down on the Sentiero Storico into Bergell. You can still discover old traces of the Romans who used this crossing back then. On the path through forest and meadow, you repeatedly catch a view of the hairpin bends of the Malojapass road, the Bergell, or Piz Badile. After about 30 minutes you reach the pass road, where there is a bus stop. Along the main road, past the ruins of the church San Gaudenzio, the path continues to Casaccia. This village at the foot of the pass road used to be an important transshipment point along the major trade routes. Still, the ruins of an old tower rise behind the village, once a guardian of the alpine routes. At Casaccia, traces of a restored Roman road can be found at the Septimer Pass. From Casaccia, you walk over a beautiful meadow and a bridge over the Maira. Following the river, after one hour you arrive in Roticcio, where a fantastic view of the valley and the village Vicosoprano awaits. The path leads through forest and meadows, becomes wider, and then turns into a driveway that quickly takes the hiker to the campsite above Vicosoprano. Over the bridge, the narrower path leads into the village where this hike ends.
