Burgruine Schwarzenstein, Obersaxen
The ruins of Schwarzenstein Castle are enthroned high above the rocks that tumble down to the valley floor of the Vorderrhein; not visible from the Obersax terrace, but easy to reach.

Beschreibung

From the castle ruins, you can look down into the valley and across to Breil/Brigels. Essential parts of the castle are still recognizable today. These are divided into a west and an east wing, with a spacious courtyard area in between. Interesting details can be observed in the remains of the walls. The entrance was boldly constructed, but is still accessible today. No noble family is associated with the name Schwarzenstein. The castle, like the others in the Obersaxen area, must have been founded by the barons of Rhäzüns, as it was in their possession in 1289. The rather careless masonry indicates that the castle was built relatively late (mid-13th century), although it is assumed that it was abandoned around 100 years later.
