Burgruine Schwarzenstein, Obersaxen
High above the rocks, which plunge down to the valley floor of the Vorderrhein, sits the castle ruin Schwarzenstein; not visible from the Obersaxer terrace, but easy to reach.

Beschreibung

From the castle ruins you can look down into the valley and over to Breil/Brigels. Significant parts of the castle are still recognizable today. These are divided into a west and an east wing, with a spacious courtyard area in between. Interesting details can be observed in the remains of the wall. The access was boldly designed, but is still accessible today.
There is no noble family associated with the name Schwarzenstein. The castle, like the others in the area of Obersaxen, will have been founded by the Barons of Rhäzüns, because in 1289 it was in their possession. The rather careless masonry suggests that the castle was built relatively late (mid-13th century), although it is believed that it was abandoned around 100 years later.
